Sightings Report for August 29th 2017

What a beautiful day in Victoria, the sun is shining and the light breeze was just enough for an adventurous ride on the water!!

Our fleet caught up with Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) as they headed West in the Jua De Fuca Strait! They were hunting and locked onto a harbour seal, our boats got to the scene as they finished their meal.

Our guests had great interactions with several humpback whales that are feeding throughout the Strait, as they came up for breathes and then gave the iconic fluke before a deep dive!

Stay tuned!

Happy Sunday! The season is going by quickly, but shows no signs of slowing down. We have had amazing interactions with orca and humpback whales all month, we are so proud to share the coast with such beautiful animals!

Our fleet caught up with the T60's again as they continue to hang out in the Salish Sea! Biggs Orca are mammal eaters and need to eat frequently in order to sustain themselves, so they are often encountered hunting. They are always a hit with the guests!

Stay tuned!

A beautiful start to the weekend, the winds have calmed down throughout the week and the sun is still shining!

Our morning tours got to encounter several humpbacks foraging in the Juan De Fuca Strait! A stop at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve is always a hit with the guests, with a high concentration of marine mammals including: seals, sea lions, and even a sea otter!

By the afternoon there were reports of Biggs orca (mammal eaters) coming into the Strait from the open Pacific! They were identified as the T60's consisting of five individuals, a mother and her four growing calves with the oldest estimated to be 16 years old!

Sightings Report for August 25th 2017

What a great day to be on the water! Sunny skies and calm winds provided great conditions for spotting the "blows" or exhales of cetaceans as they come to the surface to breathe. Our captains were ready to take on the day and see what they would encounter!

The morning trips caught up with several humpback whales that have been feeding and relaxing in the Salish Sea throughout the summer! Our nutrient rich waters provide great conditions for small herring and krill, who are main sources of prey for these gentle giants. They often gape their large mouths and swim through the schooling fish before closing their mouth and swallowing their catch!

In the afternoon several pods of Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) were spotted foraging together. The pods worked together to outmaneuver and capture their desired prey, seals!

Stay tuned for what we encounter next!

Sightings Report for August 24th 2017

Looking at the wind forecast for the day we were expecting more adventurous rides, but with the sun shining it helped keep things warm on the water. Our morning trips headed out eager and ready to see what animals were in the area!

Our fleet caught up with Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) as they searched the waters for prey! The T11's have been around for awhile now, so they must be finding a lot of mammals to snack on,. This pod consists of only two individuals; a mother and son, so they must work well together to corner and catch their target.

We also caught up with several humpback whales as they foraged in the Juna De Fuca Strait for small fish and invertebrates!

Stay tuned for what we encounter today!

Sightings Report for August 23rd 2017

What a brilliant day on the water!! The sun was out, with light winds as the captains set out to see what kind of action was taking place in the waters around Victoria.

Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) are still in the area enjoying the prey options that the Salish Sea has to offer, including; seals, porpoise, and sea lions! The whales work together to locate and take down their prey, and then share their meal as a pod/family!

Race Rocks Ecological Reserve is a great place to stop by and see the local pinnipeds. This small chain of islands is an important haul out sight for seals and sea lions to rest and sun themselves. They can often be heard "barking" and "roaring" at one another as they interact and compete for space on the rocks.

Stay tuned for what we encounter today!!

Sightings Report for August 21st 2017

It was a great day to be on the water! The skies were clear, the water was flat,  and the rare solar eclipse was fully visible!

It has been the summer of the Biggs Orca (mammal eaters)! Their presence in the Salish Sea has greatly increased this season, most likely due to the availability of prey. There were pods scattered throughout the June De Fuca Strait yesterday, our fleet caught up with several pods off the coast line of East Sooke. They were very playful as several individuals were seen cartwheeling, breaching, and slapping their fins on the surface!!

Humpback whales are also very present, as several were encountered sleeping and feeding in the Strait. These gentle giants come from the open Pacific for the summer to feed and relax before heading back down South for the winter.

Stay tuned!!

Happy Sunday! What a great day to be on the water, with reports of cetaceans in the area before our captains left the dock!

We caught up with Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) in US waters as they scanned the mouth of Puget Sound for their favourite prey; seals! They were a large pod consisting of at least six individuals, often splitting up to cover more ground, then converging after a successful hunt!

Race Rocks Ecological reserve is full of Californian and Stellar Sea Lions napping and socializing. They are often heard "barking" at one another as they shimmy across the rocks.

Stay tuned!
