Sightings Report for July 26th 2017

Today was another gorgeous day in Greater Victoria!

In the morning we came across Bigg's Orcas as well as humpback whales! We were excited to witness the humpbacks so active and even saw one doing a cartwheel - so playful! They must be enjoying feeding on krill and zooplankton in our waters right now!!

We had the opportunity to see humpback whales again in the afternoon, as well as our Southern Resident killer whales! The Southern Residents are endangered because their primary food source, Chinook Salmon, are scarce. We were excited to see this pod, as they don't often frequent the area! We hope they are finding the food they need here!

Stay tuned for what's next!

Sightings report for July 25th 2018

Happy hump day! It's already the middle of the week, and there has been so much action in the Salish Sea!!

We've had so many great encounters lately! Today a large group of Bigg's Orca (mammal eaters) were picked up right off the Victoria waterfront! We love when they are close to home!! They were actively hunting and socializing throughout the day, often seen breaching and playing with one another!! In the afternoon, all four of our boats caught up to Split Fin the humpack whale and resident Orcas! At Race Rocks, there was plenty of activity all day with seals and sea lions galore!

Sightings Report for July 24th 2018

It was a super hot day in the capital region, making for perfect conditions out on the water! Our fleet left the dock this morning with reports of many whales in the area!

Throughout the day we caught up with both ecotypes of Orca that inhabit the area! A group of Bigg's Orca (mammal eaters) were picked up by the awesome Captain Gordon this morning - good eye!! They were scanning the area, searching for their favorite prey, harbor seals and porpoises! The Southern Resident Orcas have also been spotted in the area, but because of their endangered status we had a short and sweet interaction!

Humpbacks are still here feeding on the abundance of zooplankton species in the water column! Even though their prey is microscopic, their mouths are 1/3 of their body so they can gulp down thousands of plankton at a time!!

Sightings Report for July 23rd 2018

A wonderful way to start the week!! We encountered both ecotypes of Orca, Humpbacks, and a Minke whale! There must be some pretty good eating in the Salish Sea right now!!!

Orca were reported in the area early in the morning! Turns out it was a group of Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) traveling south through the Georgia Strait. It wasn't long before the only pod of Resident Orca (fish eaters) in the area were seen, identified as the J16s! On an afternoon tour we even had passengers spot another pod of Bigg's Orca, good eye!!

Throughout the day we have the privilege of hanging out with humpback whales, here feeding on the abundance of Krill in the water column!

Sightings Report for July 22 2018

A beautiful day in the Victoria area!! Reports of Orca came in just after our fleet left the dock,  so we knew it was gonna be a great day!

Several Bigg's Orca (mammal eaters) groups were picked up in the Georgia Strait, near Vancouver! They were travelling and socializing with one another, often seen tail slapping, spy hopping, and breaching!! In the afternoon they were still in the area, so we caught back up with them as they made their way south. We also had the pleasure of spending some time with a couple large humpbacks feeding in the area throughout the day.

Sightings Report for July 21st 2018

It's a wonderful weekend to be on the water!!! The weather has been very co-oprative by bringing sunshine and calm seas. To make things better, there have been so many whales in the area lately! We love peak season!!

Reports of Humpback whales came in early and our fleet caught up with over a dozen throughout the day!! These gentle giants are everywhere, feeding on the bounty of zooplankton in the water column. We are lucky to be a part of their migration route from the southern tropical waters of Mexico and Hawaii!

Both ecotypes of orca were encountered throughout the day!! The J16's, a pod of the Southern Resident (salmon eaters) population, were seen fishing through the Juan de Fuca Strait.  By the afternoon Biggs orca (mammal eaters) were picked up east of Victoria. Several groups were encountered in a popular seal hang out, scanning the area and socializing with one another!

The winds were up yesterday,  building to 21 knots by late afternoon! Luckily our vessels are designed to handle bumpy water conditions, and experienced captains to operate them!!

Our fleet headed east of Victoria to catch up with individuals of J and K pod of the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population!! They were spread out near the San Juan Islands fishing for their main prey item, Chinook Salmon!!

Humpback whales were also encountered throughout the day! They were friendly and seemed to enjoy the wavy conditions!

Sightings Report for July 17th 2018

Another great day on the Salish Sea!! The region is going through a heat wave, so we've had the pleasure of clear sunny skies this past week! Yesterday the wind picked up into the afternoon, building to 15 knots. Good thing our vessels are designed to move through lively seas!

Reports of whales came in before our Captains left the dock, so they were excited to get out there!! The fleet encountered Biggs Orca (mammal eaters) in Washington waters! Several groups were seen socializing by tail slapping, cartwheeling and breaching!!!

Humpback whales were also encountered throughout the day. There are dozens of individuals currently here to feed in the strong upwelling currents of our coast! They are always a hit, and known for their iconic fluke as they dive!!
