OWNER & PRESIDENT
Captain Harold is the Owner/President of BC Whale Tours, Victoria's Premium Marine Adventure Company.
His love for the ocean, the outdoors and Vancouver Island's wildlife started in his youth. At 19-years-of-age he designed and built a 40-foot sailboat called the 'Lil Dreamer', which allowed him to sail the beautiful coastal waters of British Columbia.
His passion for nautical engineering and local marine environments continued throughout his 20's as he completed his marine power engineer and master's captain's qualifications while pursing a career in adventure tourism in Victoria. He started his first whale watching company in Victoria in 1996 called Eagle Wing Adventures.
The success of BC Whale Tours would not be possible without his amazing team of experienced captains, marine biologists, local naturalists and passionate guests service agents. The "crew" simply love what BC Whale Tours has to offer including conservation for the whales, the best boat ride imaginable and imparting their wealth of knowledge to others.
CAPTAIN TOM, BSC Marine Biology
An internationally qualified and experienced Marine Biologist, Tom has worked throughout Australia, Vancouver Island and Norway with various research and environmental conservation groups. He has been working on the Great Barrier Reef via Port Douglas, Far North Queensland, educating and inspiring visitors about the beauty and complexity of the reef systems. Most recently, he has just returned from leading a whale expedition in Norway and is now the North American representative of USEA diving as a patroller, which aims to educate the public of how to safely and responsibly interact with marine mammals.
As a Dive Master, he has great firsthand experience and knowledge of marine ecosystems through his countless interactions with the marine wildlife in their natural environment. His passion for the conservation of the marine world is both engaging and contagious as he inspires all of those on board.
JIM, BSC Marine Biology
Jim is an internationally acclaimed Marine Biologist in orca behaviour and conservation. He has been driving zodiacs for 18 years and loves the diverse wildlife in the waters around Vancouver Island. Jim has a great personality to go along with his extensive knowledge of marine life.
When Jim isn't driving around the local waters of Vancouver Island, chances are he's exploring one of the most extreme places on Earth -- Antarctica. As an experienced captain, he also has the uncanny ability to locate whales. Jim makes every whale watching tour the excursion of a lifetime.
With over 10 years of marine experience, Mike is a skipper, marine wildlife naturalist, eco-adventure-guide, dive instructor, and musician. He has worked around the world, travelling as far as Australia and Antarctica. He played an integral role in an unprecedented research expedition, photographing and tagging whales in the waters of Antarctica. He loves being on the water and is happy to share his knowledge of marine life.
Gord grew up in Victoria and has been exploring the coastline of Vancouver Island since the early 1980s. He first explored the coast through sailing and was a sea cadet sailing instructor for many years. He then moved into the world of commercial diving and worked in the local waters of the West Coast, where he had countless first hand encounters with just about every kind of marine life Vancouver Island has to offer. Gordon moved to Vancouver and worked at many Electronic Dance Music (E.D.M) events as a nationally-known VJ and favourite local DJ. When Gordon and his family returned to Victoria, he was drawn back to the ocean and marine explorartion, one of his greatest passions. He is now one of BC Whale Tours' Captains, where he constantly shares his passion and experience with everyone he encounters.
Russ has been a whale watching captain for the past 7 years. His experience and passion for the local wildlife is evident on all of his tours. Russ is also a coxswain for the local marine Search and Rescue for over the past 6 years. His devotion to helping people comes from his 11 years fire fighter and paramedic. You are sure to be in safe hands, whilst being entertained & informed of the local wildlife when Russ is your Captain.
Hanna grew up on the west coast of Sweden but made Victoria her home shortly after finishing high school. Her passion for whales has been with her since young age and she loves educating passengers about all the different species we encounter here in the pacific North West. During off season Hanna volunteers as a research assistant to help catalog humpback whales and killer whales and to get a better understanding of the giant marine mammals we are so lucky to share our waters with.
Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Rachel grew up in Port Alberni and spent the summer months of her childhood exploring the west coast waters off Vancouver Island between Victoria and Tofino on her fathers 35ft Bayliner. She has 8 years experience working in marine environments and used to run her own whale watching company out of Ucluelet, BC called SpyHop Ocean Adventures. Looking for a change of work scenery, this is Rachel's first year with BC Whale Tours.
Bryttni grew up on a farm in rural Alberta with a lifetime love of animals. After getting her academic start at the University of Regina, she re-located to the West Coast to finish her degree at the University of Victoria and to pursue a passion for the ocean and all its marine creatures. BC Whale tours provides many opportunities to gain experience and knowledge as a developing Biology student. Bryttni is keen to support wildlife conservation efforts in the area by teaching others the role whales play in a healthy ecosystem on the southern coast of Vancouver Island.
Alicia grew up in the Cowichan Valley and has always been mesmerized by Vancouver Islands nature and surrounding marine ecosystems. She is currently studying biology and ocean sciences at the University of Victoria, and is passionate about marine wildlife and conservation. She is most excited to be apart of our incredible team as BC Whale Tours and is eager to learn every day about whales, wildlife, and the ocean!
